Love her or hate her, Jillian’s got something going on right now. Between The Biggest Loser, contributing editor for Self Magazine, a multitude of books and DVDs, and some *ahem* supplements *cough* – she’s the poster child for weight loss these days.
I’ll admit, I loves me some Jillian. I do cringe when she plays psychiatrist on TBL, but overall I think she talks a good game and knows what she’s doing. Reading Master Your Metabolism confirmed my thoughts. I thought it was a great book for someone like me – someone who wants to know the in’s and out’s of weight loss.
I’ve been on every diet known to man, so I know that basically it comes down to calories in / calories out. In Master Your Metabolism, Jillian takes the time to explain how metabolism works, and how the foods we eat and the environment we live in can affect our metabolic rate. There are some VERY technical parts of this book, which I enjoyed, but which I also feel are not for everyone. However, the book is set up in a way that allows the reader to skip to the parts that they’re interested in without missing any vital information.
Besides the nitty-gritty details of metabolism and weight loss, I like the way Jillian broke down her plan into simple steps that seem easy to do and sustainable. She’s not asking you to eat 1,200 calories and work out for 6 hours a day. Her plan is very reasonable and made for the real world. She gives a great little cheat sheet for creating your meals, which I found to be the most helpful part of the book.
A unique part of the book was a section on environmental elements (toxins) that Jillian feels can affect your metabolism and weight loss efforts. This section is a bit overwhelming, but even Jillian says to do what you can – while she may be the extreme in clean living, you can pick and choose which changes to make to your lifestyle.
I wish she would have provided more ideas on the “cheat sheet” – I felt it was a good start, but needed more food options. She also doesn’t go into specific exercise too much (you’ll have to buy her other two books for that). The technical stuff is a little overwhelming at times, and I found myself skipping over sections that laid it on thick.
Overall, I found this book to be extremely informative and helpful. I am trying to incorporate some of Jillian’s ideas on creating a healthier environment, and will be using her sample menu plans to try to cut out more processed food from my diet. I’d say if you’ve been wanting to read this book, go for it! You’ll be glad you did. You can purchase it on Amazon by clicking the link here:

Thank you! I've been wondering about that book. My "eye time" is scarce so I hate to buy a book and find that it doesn't meet expectations. I'll be picking this one up! Deb
Jillian Michael's fame hasn't spread to England yet.
I'm mid way through a book too- unrefined is the way to go!
mmm. I think I might really get into the technical stuff….but ever since her supplements I have been kind of wary of her…I wonder if she is just another sell out.
I've read the book as well. Even though disappointed she into promoting supplements, what she has to say in the book is very valid. We are surrounded by toxins and each day our bodies are being polluted. When you look at the ingredients in a food product, and if you can't pronounce it, our bodies also don't know what to do with it. Whole, live and unprocessed is the only way to go. However, I find it difficult to completely embrace this as it is not easy. But I am trying…. :) Nice review.
I have always hated Jillian. I don't know, it's almost like because she is skinny and supple, all fat people in the world should be able to do the same thing she can. Okay, maybe they can get to her point, but in the meantime, be nice!! They need to build up!! I just want to slap her every time I see her. I'll have to check that book out though! Did she have a lip job?
That was nice of you to do the book review. She obviously walks the walk or she wouldn't have those fabulous abs. I do however have to say she is not my favorite when it comes to her methods of motivating people on the Biggest Loser (I just did a post about BL today!)
Thanks for the book review. I love Jillian and Bob. I would love to train with either for just one month. I probably won't be able to walk, but at least I will be a little smaller, LOL.. But seriously, I will have to check this book out. I need all the help I can get, LOL
I was wondering what that book was all about. I am less skeptical now than I was before. Thanks for the review!
Interesting…I'm more of a Bob fan-especially with the supplements-but I sure appreciate your thoughts. Sounds like something to check out :D
Thanks for the review.. I do believe you can't out train a bad diet… having said that.. it sure is hard!
