Weight Loss Plus Weekends Equals Massive FAIL

Hidie-ho, good people! How the heck are ya? Did you eat well, exercise, take care of yourself this weekend?

I did none of those things.

This weekend entailed two trips to visit family – in-laws on Saturday, my family on Sunday. Both trips were for major events: Saturday was a funeral (my husband’s Great Uncle), Sunday was a Christening (for my twin baby cousins). Talk about the circle of life – remembering the life of someone who lived to be 100, and celebrating the start of two new little lives.

Saturday I was on my own with the girls at my in-law’s house while they went to the funeral services. Left in a house that is NOT on a diet, which meant lots of chips, cookies, cheese, etc. I’m sure you can conclude what happened there.

Sunday was a 5 course dinner after the Christening, which was delicious, but a LOT of food – and yes, I ate it all.

Where did my resolve go? Why do I let it just disappear at times like these? These are the mysteries that I’m still working to discover. I should have prepared for my in-law’s house by bringing my own food – lesson learned. Going to a function like the Christening just requires that I remain focused and present, and STOP EATING when I’m full.

So, now it’s Monday. I’m coming off a 1/2 pound gain from Friday, and 2 days of eating with abandon (and no exercise, natch). I’m going to try to make up for it by eating 1,200 calories a day for the next four days. Just until my weigh-in on Friday, just to get my head back in the game. Hopefully I can head off another gain this week at least, and get back on track!

I always find family functions to be so hard! There's way too much food and good stuff to boot! But, you're right about remaining focused and present – that's a great plan for the next time. It's easy to get lost in the moment and easy to lose track of what you're eating. Definitely been there – too many times!!

Don't worry about the weekend, though and just get right back into the game. I suggest you stay your usual course; cutting back to only 1200 calories might leave you feeling deprived and thwart your good intentions. Maybe opt for hitting the gym hard again (remember your last couple weeks – you were smokin' it!) and keeping your food intake as per your regular plan. You can do it, Jenn!!!!

These occasions are just crucial :(
We had a birthday celebration this week and I tried to convince people that it was okay for me not to eat from some of the served food and cakes. First, they understood. And then they started 'why don't you eat? Just a little? It won't hurt a thing? taste this!'. It was so annoying, because I really hate when you try to be in control and this happens. I usually end up giving in, but anyway. So, I think at least you didn't get these kind of annoying questions and a weekend of eating won't screw up your overall weight loss I guess.
Btw, after a heavy weekend I usually have a fruit/veggie day and then everything goes back to normal. You'll be fine, don't worry about that.

it's really hard for me when I'm not at home. Especially if I go out of town. It's the "I'm not at home, I rarely go out, LET'S DO THIS" mentality.

My bachelorette party is this weekend and I guarantee I'll be eating like a cow. And at the end of the month I'll be going to Hawaii for a week. Yeah. Hahaha. FOOD.

My question is whether you enjoyed it. Were you just shoveling it in or were you…uh…savoring the unexpected abundance you had the opportunity to partake in? :-)

Thank you for this post! I've had this experience frequently and I have a lot of difficulty getting around caving into peer pressure. A friend of mine always asks if we can get dessert (I swear I gain 3 lbs every time we hang out). If my family was close by I would have a MUCH harder time sticking to my diet. I am locking myself in a closet over Thanksgiving.

Your still doing an amazing job! Remember that! Little slip ups now and again are only failures when you continue doing them. When you realize you made a mistake and jump back on the wagon….that is a success!

Who would want to be totally divorced from enjoying good food with family? Not I! Isn't being successful long-term mainly about doing just what you're doing … if you indulge for special occasions, then you need to up activity a bit and make good choices for the next few days.

It's hard not to associate special occasions with free-range buffet grazing. Celebrating, family, friends….and carrots?! Sorry – I'd probably have done the same as you. You'll be back with the program soon.

I should have read this before I gobbled up several mini boxes of milk duds, leftovers from Halloween.

Sorry the weekend didn't go well with you health wise, but you hit right on the nose about preparing yourself of what to eat. I have noticed that if I don;t mentally prepare myself and think over what I'm going to allow myself to eat or bring something myself- I will go hogwild on the food!

It's pain in the butt to do, but it's well worth it when you can enjoy yourself and feel good about what you ate at the same time.

gosh, i feel like this is contagious so many of us are kinda in this spot. I have much less control than I used to. But this happens right? So we just need to move forward and make good decisions?

Jenn – I can so relate to this post. I've experienced the same thing over and over again! I heard an interesting thing in a sermon of all places, but he was talking about eating together. And he said when we are gathering for a family event it's not about the food, but the emotions around the food. The comfort, the closeness, and the feeling of belonging somewhere. For some reason that really struck a chord with me.

I hope you have a fabulous, strong week!

I can totally relate to this post. There are many family and social events where I just cave. I hear people say that events are about the company and not about the food. That's is not always true. At least it's not so in my culture. Every family event is about the food and the company. It's tough. Hopefully we'll make healthier choices more often than bad ones.

    Great post.
